Every sector has its own language – these are some of the key acronyms which are widely used in Adult Community Learning.

ACL – Adult and Community Learning Service

AET – Award in Education and Training (formerly PTLLS)

CET – Certificate in Education and Training (formerly CTLLS)

DET – Diploma in Education and Training (formerly DTLLS)

ALDD – Adults with Learning Difficulties and/or Disabilities

AEB – Adult Education Budget

(D)BIS – Department of Business, Innovation and Skills

CLT – Community Learning Trust Programme Area

CIF – Ofsted’s Common Inspection Framework, which sets out the expectations Ofsted have of all learning providers

ESOL – English for Speakers of Other Languages

FE Choices – Independent and official site for comparing performance information about all further education colleges and other organisations that receive Government funding to offer education and training to people over the age of 16.

FEML – Family English, Maths and Language Programme Area

GLH – Guided Learning Hours – the length in hours of a course of learning

ILP – Individual Learning Plan

ILT – Information and Learning Technology

OLT(A) – Observation of Learning, Teaching and Assessment (procedures for checking quality in the classroom)

RARPA – Recognising and Recording Progress and Achievement (in non-accredited learning)

ESFA – Education and Skills Funding Agency (Government agency for funding education)

SCC – Staffordshire County Council

SAR – Self-Assessment Report (produced annually by the Service for ESFA and Ofsted)

STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths Programme Area

QIP – Quality Improvement Plan (identified from the SAR)

ULN – Unique Learner Number

VLE – Virtual Learning Environment – online space with cloud storage and other facilities to enhance learning

WFL – Wider Family Learning Programme Area – courses for families to learn together
