It’s getting a bit late now we’re into February but as this is my first post of 2018 I will stick with my title: New Year, New Horizons. It just goes to show how easy it is to be carried along by time, unless you make an effort to put your head up now and again and assess where you are!

I have come across a wide range of great resources recently which I will share with you below. All credit to the various sources of these.  But first of all, a couple of important dates to save:

Staffordshire ACL CPD sessions for tutors – watch out for more details to follow shortly

19th March am Sharing Best Practice in working with supported learners

20th April am The Learner Journey

Online training resources – getting digital

The Education and Training Foundation are currently offering free access to some online training modules, designed to help tutors get the most from technology eg how to use video resources, how to social media, how technology can help with differentiation…the courses run in February and you can sign up now by following this link:

STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths

2018 is the Year of Engineering so you can expect to see a range of events linked to this curriculum area.   https://www.yearofengineering.gov.uk/

Stem learning (https://www.stem.org.uk/ ) is another source of materials and ideas.

As we saw earlier in the year (https://staffsacl.wordpress.com/2017/12/05/sharing-good-practice/ ) STEM topics can be a great way to engage a diverse range of learners with fascinating, hands-on and practical activities, that also happen to develop maths and IT skills.  Do have a look at the websites above – you are sure to get some inspiration!

Equality and Diversity

FE Equality Newsletter January 2018

If you don’t already subscribe to this EDI newsletter from Pinnacle Training Solutions, I would highly recommend it: you get an email once a month with a wealth of interesting and useful stuff, tailor-made for FE and adult education. The newsletter always features a reminder about national events such as LGBT History Month (February 2018) and Safer Internet Day (6th Feb 2018) .

January’s update also includes:

  • a great EDI quiz based on the #Vote100 campaign to celebrate the centenary of women getting the vote in the UK.
  • Links to a mass of SEND / ALDD resources and information available from the ETF including online training modules on supporting learners and progression options https://www.foundationonline.org.uk/course/view.php?id=123#section-0
  • and an Excellence Gateway for Sharing Good Practice, https://send.excellencegateway.org.uk/ including good RARPA practice.
  • Interesting introduction and links on ‘Nancy Kline’s Thinking Environment’.  The ten behaviours that generate the finest thinking, and have become known as The Ten Components of a Thinking Environment, are:

Attention,

Equality,

Ease,

Appreciation,

Encouragement,

Feelings,

Information,

Diversity,

Incisive Questions,

Place.

It’s a kind of hierarchy of needs for good thinking and learning. Watch the intro here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYWDCjYmQ7w

If any Staffs ACL tutors would like to write a short guest blog, to tell about what you are up to, I would be very happy to post it! Also, if you have any requests or suggestions of themes to cover, please leave me a comment below.

See you soon!
