Mental Health Awareness sessions – Another Exciting CPD opportunity for tutors – book NOW

(and by 7th January at the latest)

One in 4 of us will be affected by a mental health condition in our lifetimes. Clearly there are many learners on our courses who are experiencing mental health issues and as tutors, we want to feel confident that we are doing our best for them.

We have asked Changes to deliver a 2.5 hour session with the title “How best to support learners with mental ill health” for tutors.
The sessions will be:

• Wednesday 27th January 2016, 14.00-16.30 at Stafford SP1
• Wednesday 27th January 2016, 17.30-20.00 at Stafford SP1
• Friday 5th February 2016, 9.30-12.00 at Lichfield Library

The sessions are free to tutors working on ACL programmes this year. You will be given lots of ideas on how to recognise learners with mental health issues and how best to support their learning within your group. Please book your place by emailing, stating which session you would like to attend.

Support for using ILT

At the tutor induction sessions in September we asked tutors to rate their confidence with the new Professional Standards Promoting and supporting learners with using technology in the classroom was the area tutors felt least confident with. To let us know what support in particular you need please complete this short survey:

You should have already received an email directly from ACL with the link and thanks to those who have already replied – some very interesting answers so far.
We have extended the return date until Wednesday 6th January 2016 to allow as many tutors as possible to complete, and will use the information to plan support for tutors in terms of training and equipment.

Equality and Diversity

This is a theme that we have been aware of for some time now, and as tutors we know to include a range of resources and images to ensure all learners are included. But what about some fresh ideas? Something a little different and with more impact?

Staffs ACL are making available to tutors a “Staff Diversity Calendar” produced by NIACE and Pinnacle Training. This is a great resource for tutors of all subjects and will help you embed Equality and Diversity into your course. The calendar includes links to other useful websites, tips for embedding equality and a wide variety of dates which can be used for discussion or themes for learning activities. For example, December can be used to talk about much more than fireworks and Christmas!

Here are some ideas from the Diversity calendar:

• 2nd December – International Day for the Abolition of Slavery
• 3rd December – International Day for Persons with Disabilities
• 6th December – Hanukkah
• 10th December – Human Rights Day
• 18th December – International Migrants Day
• 4th January – World Braille Day
• 27th January – Holocaust Memorial Day

You can download the entire calendar from Fenc here Equality and Diversity calendar . We will aim to highlight some of the most useful ideas every month in the blog update.

In the meantime we wish you all the very best Season’s Greetings and a very restful break…we look forward to a successful 2016!
