Young adults in England have scored among the lowest results in the industrialised world in international literacy and numeracy tests.

A major study by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) shows how England’s 16 to 24-year-olds are falling behind their Asian and European counterparts.

England is 22nd for literacy and 21st for numeracy out of 24 countries.

The study shows that there are 8.5 million adults in England and Northern Ireland with the numeracy levels of a 10-year-old., 8 October 2013

Following yesterday’s shocking statistics about adult functional skills in the UK, here are some resources to help you embed English, Maths and IT into your teaching.  For vocational tutors, it is all about being aware of the skills your learners need, in order to carry out the activities involved in your subject.  Make sure that learners are aware of what these skills – that is, don’t just give instructions for a task but talk about the skills involved.  Where necessary, you will need to give learners strategies to improve their skills in order to accomplish the tasks successfully.
